State of Fatherhood in Brazil 2019: Time to Act

Daniel Costa Lima, Milena Do Carmo Cunha Dos Santos, Promundo

State of Fatherhood in Brazil 2019: Time to Act is the second report of its kind in the country, which is part of the State of Fatherhood in the World initiative, led by the MenCare Global Fatherhood Campaign. The second Brazilian report intends to update the first report on the State of Fathers in Brazil, launched by Promundo-Brasil in 2016, in addition to bringing excerpts from the global report State of the World's Fathers: Time for Action. Mundo: Tempo de Agir”, in Portuguese), produced by Promundo-USA, Sonke Gender Justice, Save the Children and Aliança MenEngage, launched in 2017.

This report also incorporates results from Brazil's pioneering research, Helping Dads Care, produced in conjunction with Unilever's Dove Men+Care, with the aim of understanding the reasons why some fathers choose not to take paternity leave and why so many are unable to be involved in raising their sons and daughters as they would like.

This report turns its attention to what actually needs to be done so that more and more men, fathers and institutions engage in the discussion about and practice of building healthy fatherhoods.
