The “Sem Vergonha” campaign, aimed at promoting the sexual and reproductive health of young people, launched in nine public schools in Rio de Janeiro at the end of 2013, will be expanded in 2014. In partnership with the Health and Prevention in Schools program the campaign will reach other teaching units, in addition to deepening the discussion with some of the schools that participated last year.
Awareness-raising workshops on gender, sexual rights and reproductive rights, sexual diversity, sexually transmitted diseases, teenage pregnancy and drugs have been held since May with students and teachers from the 12 participating schools. In July, students will develop an action plan to disseminate the campaign and use the pieces in their schools.
“I learned to listen to other people's opinions, what boys think and what girls think. I don't usually talk about sex and this exchange was very useful. It’s important for us to be able to talk,” said Carolina Chagas, 16 years old.
“Sem Vergonha” was created by a group of students who underwent similar training and reached around 3 thousand students with messages to prevent HIV/AIDS and promote sexual and reproductive health in 2013. The campaign includes informative booklets and murals that will be available in schools, four videos scripted and performed by young people, website, Facebook page, t-shirts and buttons.
The initiative is part of the “Mais Pai” project developed by Promundo in Brazil, and by partner organizations in South Africa, Indonesia and Rwanda.
