Promundo received the Juscelino Kubitschek Award from the IDB




On April 26, 2016, Promundo-Brasil received the Juscelino Kubitschek Award from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for its work on issues related to human rights in Brazil. The Award, which recognizes the contributions of outstanding actors in the economy and finance, as well as in cultural, social and scientific themes, was presented by the IDB representative in Brazil Hugo Florez Timorán at Promundo's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.


The fourth edition of the award, which takes place every two years, was based on innovative practices. Approximately 400 proposals were received, representing organizations from 26 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Each category receives a prize of US$100,000, which is divided equally when there is more than one winner per category.


With 18 years of experience, and offices in Brazil, the United States, Portugal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, he has worked in several countries around the world promoting non-violent masculinities and equality between men and women. In Latin America we have adapted and disseminated our methodologies and research in Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua.


Chaired by IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno, the Selection Committee met in Washington at the end of 2015. Former Iberoamerican Secretary General, Enrique V. Iglesias, served as secretary of the committee. This year's members were former president of Ecuador Osvaldo Hurtado, former governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson, current governor of the Bank of Spain Luis Maria Linde, former United Nations diplomat Paulo Pinheiro, the president of the Bank of Japan for International Cooperation, Hiroshi Watanabe, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Barbados, Billie Miller, the coordinator of the Contemporary Amazon Program (Amazon IEA), Maritta Koch-Weser, the Nicaraguan writer Gioconda Belli and from Colombia, the advisor of the Avina Foundation president, Bernardo Toro.


In addition to the Promundo Institute, the Ecuadorian Populorum Progressio Fund from Ecuador won in the Social, Cultural and Scientific category and in the Economy and Finance category the winner was Fonkoze, from Haiti. On this same occasion, the Award Selection Committee decided to award mentions of honor to three organizations, in recognition of the excellence of their work: Ação Empreendedora of Chile, Fundação PROFIN of Bolivia and Young Marine Explorers of the Bahamas.
