Promundo launches guide on sexuality education and diary for boys and girls at event in Rio

On June 28th, Promundo launched the guide “Adolescents, young people and sexuality education”, and the publication “Making a Difference: diary of girls and boys” during the 1st Colloquium on the Sexual Rights of Children and Adolescents, in PUC-Rio. Around 200 people linked to the issue of guaranteeing the sexual and reproductive rights of children and adolescents participated in the launch and had free access to the publications.

The guide “Adolescents, young people and sexuality education” aims not only to provide academic content and deepen the discussion on sexuality in adolescence, but also to contribute to breaking taboos and prejudices related to the topic. It is a tool that guides the practice of professionals and people who work with Sexual Rights and Reproductive Rights with adolescents and young people by providing scientifically correct, realistic and non-judgmental information.

“Making a Difference” is a publication that proposes reflection and behavioral change related to gender that can produce situations of prejudice and discrimination. Playful material, using the language of a diary, brings provocations and discussions on the topic.

According to Dilma Cupti, manager of the Adolescent Health program at the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Department of Health and Civil Defense, the guide came at an important time in which the city is experiencing expansion of primary care. “In Rio de Janeiro we are experiencing a transformation in primary care, we intend to see a very large expansion in the city. Professionals need material that helps with the issue of knowledge and care for adolescents and the guide will be very useful. There are a lot of new people in the profession and we can't provide training for everyone, so this material is ten. I’m dying to see how we will disseminate it within the service,” she said.

As for “Making a Difference”, Dilma states that it brings a fundamental discussion to teenagers. “It is important for them to know themselves better, to know what arguments to use when faced with a situation of discrimination, or to rethink their stance towards others. In addition to being very beautiful, attractive, with very interesting language”, he adds.

The guide will be available for download from June 30th on the Promundo website and “Making a Difference” will be distributed in partner schools in Rio, Niterói and Salvador.
