Promundo launches children's book on preventing violence in children's education

The children's book Vento no Rosto will be launched on May 3, at 5 pm, at FIRJAN (Graça Aranha nº 1, Center – Rio de Janeiro) with a debate on the Bill to prevent physical and humiliating punishments against children. The debate will have the participation of Carlos Zuma, from the Noos Institute, and Ana Paula Rodrigues, from the Xuxa Meneghel Foundation.

The story of Lucas, the book's central character, was created by 12 boys and girls, between 6 and 13 years old, from the Maré community, participants in the Sport, Culture and Citizenship project of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The project developed by Promundo, with funding from Save the Children, aimed to give children a voice on how they think they could be educated without the use of violence. The work is part of the Institute's efforts to stimulate debate about alternatives to education without the use of physical and humiliating punishments.

The work addresses in a playful way, with simple language, issues such as obedience, punishment, duties, rights and obligations of each family member and the dialogue between them.“Our idea is that the book is an instrument of dialogue between parents and children. We understand that children are subjects of rights, which does not mean thinking of them as little adults, but considering their feelings, desires and perception of the world itself. We hope that adults realize that children have ideas that need to be taken into account when it comes to deciding the direction of their own lives”, explains Letícia Serafim, communications coordinator at Instituto Promundo and one of the book's writers.Since 2005, Instituto Promundo, co-founder of Rede Não Bata, Eduque, has been seeking strategies to reflect with guardians on children's rights, including their right to express opinions on issues that directly affect their lives.
