Promundo involves 60 young people from Maré and Cidade de Deus, in Rio de Janeiro, in preventing sexual and gender-based violence

Promundo, in partnership with Conexão G and the Associação Semente da Vida da Cidade de Deus (ASVI), is carrying out the Gender, Human Rights and Health project in the communities of Maré and Cidade de Deus, Rio de Janeiro.

Funded by the Socio-Environmental Stock Exchange (BVSA) and Kindernothilfe (KNH), the project seeks to involve 60 teenagers and young people, aged between 12 and 21, in preventing sexual and gender-based violence and defending human rights.

Nine thematic workshops were developed for the two communities based on Programs H and M, in which gender awareness is accompanied by discussion on race, ethnicity and sexual diversity, as cross-cutting themes.

The methodology was also based on the results of a focus group carried out before the implementation of the project, during which the need to guarantee even safer spaces for young people and adolescents who were more vulnerable to violence was highlighted. To this end, specific workshop groups were created for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transvestite, transsexual and transgender teenagers and young people, in the case of Cidade de Deus; and for transvestites, transsexuals and transgender people, in the case of Maré.

The cycle of thematic workshops has already been completed and in the current phase of the project a community campaign is being created in a participatory manner with young people from both communities. To promote the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, the campaign will seek to work with the community's child and adolescent protection network, as well as encourage self-protection and self-esteem among adolescents and young people.
