Promundo contributes to the development of a campaign to involve young men in topics related to sexual health and reproductive health in Peru

At the invitation of UNFPA Peru, Promundo programs coordinator Vanessa Fonseca was in Lima, between the 11th and 13th of July, holding a workshop to develop a community campaign to involve young men, between 15 and 24 years old, on topics related to sexual health and reproductive health. Around 20 people participated in the meeting, including students from a public school, university students and activists from youth movements in Lima.

The workshop proposed identifying gender stereotypes and patterns and the consequences that power relations can affect the sexual and reproductive health of men and women. “You can’t talk about sexual health and reproductive health without talking about gender relations, roles and power relations”, said Vanessa Fonseca.

From reflection on these themes, participants were able to identify ways to change attitudes and as a starting point for building the campaign, they highlighted the need for men to be open to transformations.

As part of the methodology, participants created characters, which help them identify the means and spaces of influence of these young people. Among the strategies suggested to reach the campaign's target audience are theater, graffiti, music (hip hpo), contests, internet, etc. From there, they raised themes and prepared the first campaign messages. The themes chosen were: violence, paternity, condom use and stereotypes.

To assess the impact of the prepared message, young people went to the streets of Lima to test the messages with some people. After this process, the campaign is sent to a communications agency that will refine the ideas produced by young people.

The meeting was organized by the city of Lima and sponsored by UNFPA.
