Promundo carried out a pilot of the Practicing Sports, Winning in Life project in the context of the New DEGASE (General Department of Socio-Educational Actions), an entity linked to the State Department of Education, which has the responsibility of promoting socio-education of adolescents in conflict with the law in the Rio de Janeiro state.
Lasting five months, the pilot was carried out in the women's unit of Novo DEGASE, the only one in the entire state. The project involved 50 teenagers in sports and gender awareness and violence prevention workshops in the urban context.
Sports practice is based on the methodology of social training, which uses sport for human development. The awareness-raising workshops are based on Program M , which seeks to promote gender equity through the empowerment of young women in the context of interpersonal relationships, health and sexual and reproductive rights.
The pilot was divided into two cycles. In the first cycle, only girls who completed provisional measures of up to 45 days were involved. In the second cycle, girls were involved who were undergoing socio-educational measures with deprivation of liberty.
In addition to the intervention with groups of girls, carried out by the Promundo Institute, professionals from the Special Project Management (GEPRO) of Novo DEGASE are using educational materials delivered by the Institute in their activities, including the M and P programs, the M Agent Manual and the Don't Give Bobeira campaign, which features materials aimed at preventing Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents among teenagers.
After the pilot, the possibility of expanding the intervention will be studied, including male units.
