Play+ Campaign promotes positive, egalitarian education free from physical and humiliating punishment

Promundo is carrying out the Brincar+ campaign: creating links for respectful education that will be carried out in five communities in Rio de Janeiro until the end of the year: Morro dos Prazeres, Guararapes, Maré, Cidade de Deus and Vidigal. The campaign aims to promote a positive, equal education for boys and girls and free from physical and humiliating punishments. The first launch event will be in Guararapes, Saturday, 8/11, at 3pm. On Sunday, the 9th, Morro dos Prazeres will host the action, at 4pm.

The campaign uses the concept of play as a way to prevent violence against children and adolescents. Furthermore, the act of playing helps in child development, in the formulation of concepts, and in the child's ability to resolve conflicts and is a privileged moment for the exchange of affection and trust between parents and children. On the other hand, the right to play ends up realizing another essential childhood right, which is the right to access the street and the city. The Brincar+ campaign also aims to help promote safe spaces not only at home, but on the street for children and teenagers.

To reach the campaign's audience – parents and sons and daughters from the five communities – events will be held that will promote closeness between parents and children and reflection on these topics through games. A Brincar+ memory game was developed so that children and parents can play and access messages to promote positive and respectful education. There will be a kite workshop that will encourage safety and access to the street, storytelling and the revival of old games between parents and children such as: jumping rope, elastic, hula hoop and hopscotch.

Booklets for positive and equal education will be distributed to parents. In addition, gifts such as squeeze bottles, t-shirts, bags, stickers, shopping bags and coasters will be distributed to children and adults.

To promote dialogue about sexual and reproductive rights with young people, parents of teenagers will receive a booklet with information and tips to facilitate communication between parents and sons and daughters. An agenda was produced for young people with messages on: prevention, the myth of the first time, drugs, violence prevention, human rights, racial diversity, bullying, sexual orientation, among other youth issues. Communities will receive posters with messages of promoting education with respect and without violence, as the campaign believes that children's education needs to be the responsibility of everyone: parents, neighbors, teachers, caregivers, police officers, health workers, etc.

The initiative is in partnership with Save the Children, KNH, Childhope and the Bernard Van Leer Foundation.
