Photographic exhibition: “The father’s perspective on fatherhood: father of a boy, father of a girl”

For ten years, Promundo has worked in Santa Marta to strengthen family and community support bases and promote gender equality. During this time, we realized that some fathers felt excluded from the role of caregiver and thought that having a son was not a man's job. That's why Promundo decided to create a project just for them.

A group of 10 men met for two months to reflect and exchange experiences about fatherhood and learn how to photograph. The Project “Father of a boy, father of a girl: engaging parents for gender equality”, allowed parents to think about photography and issues related to gender, masculinity, paternity, care. Through their photographs, they propose new perspectives on what it means to be a father of boys and to be a father of girls.

Throughout the meetings, the Promundo team and photographer Eliane Heeren had the privilege of getting to know what the Santa Marta parents think and feel. And for them this was a transformative experience.

From this experience, we are even more aware of the importance of fatherhood. Before, we looked at a father with a child on the street and considered it normal, no big deal. Not now, it goes much further. Understand the importance for ourselves and for our children. This work brought a new perspective to being a father, the importance of it”,

“Each photo reveals an emotion, a feeling, an affection.”Luis Kleber, 42 years old, father of two girls

In the exhibition “The father's perspective on fatherhood: father of a boy, father of a girl”, these fathers show, with great sensitivity, that sons and daughters are also a man's business!

Take the exhibition to your school, institution or community.
