This month, the PBS Learning Media website published a teacher's manual based on “Becoming a Father,” the PBS-produced documentary about Promundo's work in Brazil. Framed around the question “is the concept of men taking care of children radical?”, the manual presents questions for discussing films with students aged 13 and over, along with activities recommended by Program H | M | D of Promundo. The main topics of discussion with students include violence, masculinities, family relationships and the role of men in fatherhood and gender equality.
“Becoming a father” presents the current context of violence in Brazil, and follows the stories of two men – both fathers – who decided to reject violence, and take on the role of care and involvement in the lives of their children and partners. Questions included in the curriculum guide are designed to stimulate discussion around gender norms, specifically what it means to be a man, and how men's attitudes and behaviors – their roles at home and in their families – can contribute to gender equality. gender, and benefit their families and themselves.
