New report highlights public policies and programs that involve men in preventing violence against women in Latin America and the Caribbean

As in many regions of the world, violence against women and girls is a serious health and human rights issue in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. While initial efforts focused on protecting victims and punishing perpetrators, there is a growing consensus that to prevent violence against women and girls – and ultimately eliminate it – men and boys must be involved as part of the solution.

Promundo and partners launched the new report Involving Men in Public Policies to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls (publication in Castilian), which examines the effectiveness of policies, action plans and impact assessment programs aimed at involving men in preventing and eradicating all forms of violence against women and girls.

The report reveals that it is possible to change men's attitudes towards violence against women and girls through promising and innovative interventions. In addition to evaluating existing work at LAC, the report offers several recommendations on how to expand and strengthen these efforts to engage men in preventing violence against women and girls.

These recommendations include:

  • Carrying out more research on preventing violence against women and girls with a focus on gender and masculinities;

  • Inclusion of men's involvement in national laws and action plans to prevent violence against women and girls;

  • Implementation of more sectoral initiatives to involve men in preventing violence against women and girls;

  • Carrying out more campaigns aimed at men and boys to prevent violence against women and girls; It is

  • Carrying out more programs and interventions to prevent violence against women and girls with the male population in general.

The report was produced by UN Women, UNFPA, EME / CulturaSalud and Promundo, in collaboration with MenEngage Latin America Network.
