Ministry of Health: “Cooperation agreement will train 15 thousand health professionals”

At the beginning of September, Promundo signed a technical cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Health, aiming to train 15 thousand health professionals, throughout the national territory, in the topics of paternity and care. Below, we reproduce the text from the official website of the Ministry of Health , written by Luciano Marques and published on September 4th. Promundo is proud of this partnership and emphasizes that it is increasingly committed to gender equality and the other issues with which it works.

Let's go together, together and together?

Ministry of Health signed a partnership with Instituto Promundo to qualify care that encourages the involvement of men in the exercise of fatherhood

The Ministry of Health signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement (ACT) with the Promundo Institute. The announcement was made at the National and International Seminar on Fatherhood and Care, with the aim of qualifying primary care health professionals on men's health, following the guidelines in the Partner's Pre-Natal Guide for health professionals. The training should reach up to 15 thousand professionals across the country.

The course aims to provide health workers with information for an approach that encourages the involvement of men in the exercise of fatherhood, problematizing masculinity standards, preventing violence and promoting gender equality.

Celmário Brandão, coordinator of Men's Health Care, explains that the idea is to train professionals in all states so that more men can access the health system. “We want to promote better qualification and engagement of health teams, not only in health care for men, but also to guide them on co-responsibility and exercise of care for their children, from gestation onwards, reducing gender inequities that historically burden women. Brazilian women”, he stated.

Luciano Ramos, deputy director of the Promundo Institute, explains that both the guide and the training provide health professionals with new tools to introduce men into the health system, in order to take care of their health preventively, which ends up being reflected throughout the family. “Professionals have a lot of difficulty talking to men. Parenthood is an important window into the healthcare system. If the professional is equipped to welcome and care for this man who comes to the health service because of his child, he can introduce this man into the health system, and can take care not only of him, but also of the child and the partner with whom he man lives”, he explained.

Men's Health

One of the work axes of the National Policy for Comprehensive Attention to Men's Health (Pnaish) is Paternity and Care, which recognizes the importance of men's participation from reproductive planning, through pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, puerperium and development throughout life, having a positive impact on reducing maternal and child mortality and highlighting the importance of the partner at all stages of their children's lives.

The Partner Pre-Natal Strategy (EPNP) in primary health care seeks to significantly contribute to expanding and improving men's access to and reception of health services and, consequently, reducing morbidity and mortality rates in the male population; to increase the emotional bonds between father, mother and children; to promote human breastfeeding and reduce maternal and child mortality; to prevent and reduce the transmission of STI/HIV (including vertical transmission); and to reduce intra-family violence.
