Men's health is culturally neglected due to masculinity norms that distance them from care tasks and attention to their own health. A survey recently carried out in Brazil revealed that around 80% of the men approached attended at least one prenatal consultation for their sons and daughters, so Promundo has sought to work on fatherhood as a gateway for men into health services and to involve them in their own health and benefit women's health and the development of their sons and daughters.
With this in mind, during the month of August, in partnership with the Health Promotion Superintendency of the Municipal Department of Health and Civil Defense of Rio de Janeiro, Promundo carried out training with around 80 professionals from 25 Basic Health Units in the Municipality.
The three days of training in Program P aimed to sensitize professionals to understand the importance of involving men in taking care of their own health and in maternal and child health, in addition to creating strategies to make Health Units and their services more attractive to male participation. Each Health Unit developed an Action Plan to put these strategies into practice.
Promundo is evaluating the impact of training on changing attitudes and behavior related to gender norms among these professionals to measure the effectiveness of the approach with this audience.
