Since the beginning of the second half of 2022, Promundo has become UNICEF's implementing partner in the Anti-Racist Early Childhood Project, the PIA. Understanding racism as a form of violence to which black and indigenous children are subjected from the beginning of their lives.
Thus, the PIA aims to raise awareness among professionals in the Health, Education and Social Assistance sectors to implement services and care based on anti-racism and empower families to empower black children.
The PIA has a series of physical and PDF notebooks that support managers, technical teams and educators with practical strategies for anti-racist actions; with a web series with influencers and experts on black and indigenous childhoods; cards for social networks, pocket booklet and themed workshops for professionals in 08 capitals of the UNICEF City Agenda.
About the thematic workshops
The workshops had a methodology divided into two stages: in the morning, conceptual lectures on Racism (in its different aspects), Unconscious Biases, Whiteness and Impacts of racism in early childhood were the basis for participants' understanding; In the afternoon, a small group of professionals participated in workshops where they were able to deepen their understanding of the themes, in addition to carrying out a survey on indigenous and black First Childhood from the territory in which they work, presenting, at the end, an action plan with the anti-racist activities that are being developed in the context of the workshop participants’ activities.
This activity helps UNICEF understand how PIA can encourage such practices. Many professionals reported how powerful the PIA methodology is, both in terms of sector notebooks and the workshop that contributes to the understanding of topics that are rarely discussed in their daily work and are so sensitive. And now?
The PIA is now seen as one of the most powerful methodologies in Brazil to support public policy professionals, in different areas of activity, based on anti-racist practices. The set of strategies in the project directly contributes to professionals acting intentionally so that the childhoods of black and indigenous children can develop free from racism, as well as white children and their families acting based on anti-racism. Through this strategy, Promundo assumes an even stronger commitment to acting on anti-racism issues, through its projects and daily practices.
