Connected Youth Notebook
Dialogue with young people is a very pleasant challenge! Throughout its history, youth have been Promundo's priority audience to address topics such as masculinity, fatherhood, gender equality, female empowerment and sexual diversity. Programs M and H, for example, were created with the aim of providing methodological content for ages between 15 and 24. The reissues of the methodological notebooks and their applications created the need to expand the ages of the participating audiences, given the successes in the use of these materials.
In 2019, Promundo launched the section “Projecting Futures – from information to action” where it works with educators on methodologies to become mentors for teenagers and young people in schools,
encouraging them to pursue an academic career and enter the job market. Then, in 2020, the Organization created another notebook entitled “Facing racism and gender inequalities” and, through it, trained professionals in Health, Social Assistance, Education and Social Activists and Third Sector professionals from different States of Brazil, in methodologies for working with young people, regarding the themes of Racial Empowerment, Anti-Racism, and Gender Equity. The COVID 19 Pandemic created new needs and Promundo needed to be creative to meet the needs of the entity's participating audiences in different contexts. In Rio de Janeiro, where Promundo is developing the Jovens Pelo Fim da Violência project, the team was motivated to create a methodology where discussions, debates and methodological activities with different audiences took place via WhatsApp.However, not without taking into account the inequalities and exclusion processes regarding internet access that the pandemic brought to light. While new perspectives of online education supported by digital learning environments and the use of multiple media with access to quality internet as a central point were developing and being used increasingly by society, the Promundo Educators Team found itself in the challenge of interact with this reality, but, most of the time, going against this movement. Because creating an online methodology that also worked offline was the goal. A methodology that was inclusive, enabling the opportunity for synchronous and asynchronous participation, hence the choice of Cards as the main support for the activities. This creative process encouraged young people to exchange experiences, actively participate and dialogue. In a moment as complex as this, the groups took young people out of isolation, creating with them a space for exchange and dialogue based on issues that bother them and are close to their hearts.
This material includes Cards or banners (if you prefer to call them that) created specifically to dialogue with teenagers and young people. The methodology is innovative, as it reaches young people on their phones and invites them to participate in an active and dynamic way, without taking up too much of their time! Professionals who work with young people approved this process! And we hope you enjoy and share this idea!
